Twelfth Night, but with Disco Balls, Shines on the Wilma Stage

If Wilma Co-Artistic Director Yury Urvo could just reimagine every Shakespeare play for the Wilma stage, I’d be in the front row. His Twelfth Night, running now through June 25th, encourages audiences to sing along to “I Will Survive”. There are disco balls, shipwrecked twins who end up in a conservative beach town, drunk uncles and social media of course. Grab a cocktail at the bar in the theatre’s lobby and sit back for a wild Shakespearean ride.

Twelfth Night is the perfect show to celebrate pride month in Philadelphia. This version celebrates love and highlights the gender fluid desires that were touched on in the original piece written in 1600. Kiddie pools, beach balls and flashy swim attire may not have been around back then, but I think Shakespeare would have appreciated this modern day twist that shouts out the colorful, loud, dance-parties and sing-a-longs we all deserve to have each day.

The show features the always fantastic HotHouse company members Jered McLenigan, Brett Ashley Robinson, Keith J. Conallen, Campbell O’Hare, Ross Beschler, Suli Holum, Justin Jain, and Krista Apple, along with MK Tuomanen and the Wilma’s new Co-Artistic Director Lindsay Smiling.

Tickets to the show are available here, with performances running through June 25th. It will also be available to stream worldwide on-demand from June 26th to July 9th.
