Need a haircut? A shave? Maybe some hair care products? You can get all of that at The Blind Barber at 1325 Sansom in Philly.
But unlike most barbershops, there are a few other “must haves” here. Cocktails. I don’t just mean you get a drink to sip on while you’re getting groomed. This is next level! Head to the back of the room passed the barber chairs and open the white door…
You’ll find a small bar, stocked with everything to make the most deliciously unique cocktails. Go deeper by taking the stairs to a second story where there’s more seating, cozy booths, another bar and a dance floor. Wood paneling and a checkered black and white floor transport you away from Center City and into a speakeasy experience that you need to see for yourself.
Blind Barber didn’t get to have a big grand opening celebrating (thanks pandemic) so we’re celebrating now! Last night I got to try some of the clever cocktails. I threw it back to a simpler time by ordering the Doug Funnie (gin, fresh beet juice, orange blossom, blood orange simple syrup) and the Spicy Caillou (Mezcal, red pepper simple syrup, Ancho Reyes Chili, ginger, lime) along with the Lady Grey (Earl grey infused gin, Lillet Rose, blackberry, lemon). Beer, wine, seltzers and zero proof options are also on the menu. If you truly want to celebrate a special occasion, full bottles of liquor like vodka and whisky can be purchased. Dom Perignon too of course. This is a great place to go big.
Their menu also includes some fun bar snacks like a local pickle plate, house made popcorn, and pimento dip. For dinner, it’s grilled cheese all the way! They have five different kinds and I sampled the cubano! Mmm. But I really need to return for the “broccoli and cheese” variety (with crunchy broccoli?!) or the “French bakery” with brie and apricot preserves.
Blind Barber also has locations in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. You can purchase their sustainable products online too if you don’t live near any of the shops. A percentage of every sale goes towards programs that will collect and recycle as much plastic waste from the environment as they use in their packaging and operations. You can read more about that here.
