Philadelphia’s coffee and bubble tea scene is about to get a lush addition with a new gorgeous plant-filled cafe in the heart of Center City. Long-time friends and business partners Michelle Miller and Molly Kiriacoulacos announce the grand opening of The Ground Rittenhouse, located at 120 S. 18th Street. The Olde Kensington-based coffee shop, bubble tea cafe, plant store and gift shop will now expand with a second location that is double the size, with room for an even larger selection of curated food, drink and plant offerings. The 1,500 square feet space was transformed from top to bottom into an urban oasis with features that include a refinished coffee and espresso bar, eclectic and comfy cafe seating, unique new interactive bubble booth, Parisian vibes and a hand-painted wall mural of Rittenhouse Square.

Patrons will find exclusive locally roasted beans, a brand new house roast “The Botanist,” an expanded bubble tea program and whimsical seasonal specialty offerings. From the kitchen, look for a selection of fresh French sweet and savory flaky pastries, unique breakfast sandwiches and the famous Croffle (South Korean treat that brings together a French Croissant and a Belgian Waffle). For plants, look for everything from petite succulents to trailing vines to statement-making fiddle leaf figs and monsteras – in every size and variety.

“We are thrilled to bring The Ground to Rittenhouse Square,” said Miller. “Five years ago I opened and built DAPR Grooming Parlour right across the street with my husband. I love this neighborhood and this block. It represents the true hustle and bustle of Center City – and has an amazing electric energy. We feel our little concept can bring not only a lot of happiness to residents and visitors, but it can bring a nice balance to the area. We are honored to have the opportunity to create a space that is cozy and warm – and will offer joy that only hundreds of living plants can bring.”

“Opening in Rittenhouse Square feels like the perfect match for our second shop,” said Kiriacoulacos. “I’m excited to bring our unique concept to such an iconic part of Philadelphia and I’m looking forward to The Ground becoming a part of the neighborhood’s daily rhythm. We’ve been looking to expand to a second location for a while and it’s a dream come true to find a space that feels like it suits our vibe so perfectly.  I can’t wait to welcome both familiar and new faces to our little jungle oasis on the square.”

Established in 2021, The Ground Coffee, Plants & Gifts embodies the motto to ‘Propagate Kindness’ through every cup served and interaction shared.  Known for our dynamically evolving menu that showcases both inventive seasonal delights and beloved classic treats. Each element of our café has been thoughtfully designed to foster a warm, whimsical atmosphere where delicious treats, lush plants and fun gifts abound—most of which are meticulously sourced from local artisans.

Spring 2024 marks an exciting expansion with the opening of The Ground Rittenhouse, the company’s second and larger location. This new space aims to deepen the owners’ connection with the community, providing another cozy gathering spot that not only serves neighbors but also enriches the local culture through workshops and events aligned with our core values and mission. At our new location, whether visitors are seeking a serene spot to unwind, a creative workshop or gift to inspire, The Ground hopes to be a new go-to in Rittenhouse.

The Ground features drip coffee and artisanal coffee drinks, various teas, bubble tea and other drinks which feature inspiration from Miller’s Korean lineage, and pastries (including beignets, croissants, Danishes, muffins, and more) from Au Fournil in Narberth, PA. All beans are roasted locally for The Ground, including their all new House roast “The Botanist” which they’re launching in conjunction with the second location.  The Botanist is a signature coffee that celebrates the harmony of nature and nurture.  This blend is perfect for those who appreciate the delicate balance of robust flavors and subtle botanical notes.

Look for breakfast and lunch cafe favorites made to order with a celebration of food and flavor that pair with the coffee and bubble tea program. For the original menu, The Ground celebrates and incorporates influences from Miller’s Korean American experience. The new location will soon add new offerings that will expand on those flavor profiles, while also starting to incorporate items influenced by Kiriacoulacous’ Southern roots. The opening menu will include a mix of sweet and savory French pastries, along with a tight list of breakfast and lunch croissant sandwiches, and the famous Croffle.

The Ground also invites guests to peruse the curated collection of houseplants that are not only beautiful but also eco-friendly. The Owners take pride in sourcing their plants locally whenever possible to reduce their carbon footprint and support community growers. From petite succulents and trailing vines to statement-making fiddle leaf figs and monsteras, The Ground offers plants of all sizes and varieties to suit every space and skill level. Whether you’re a seasoned plant parent or a beginner looking to greenify your home, they have the perfect plant for you. The knowledgeable staff is on hand to provide personalized recommendations and expert care tips to ensure that your new leafy companions thrive in their new environment.

Many of the plants in the cafe come from an expansive greenhouse which Miller built on her property in Mount Airy with the help of Kiriacoulacos. The two will continue this program with an inventory which features a mix of plants grown at home, as well as others sourced from local nurseries. Additionally, the partners compost coffee grinds for their own needs, as well as for the neighborhood.
