Strays: The must-see, foul-mouthed dogs of the summer

-Brenda Hillegas

When’s the last time you laughed so hard you cried?

It’s a good feeling right? Just like Bug loves the feel of a couch or Reggie loves the garden gnome. No idea what I’m talking about? Come meet the dogs in Strays and you’ll see. You’ll see more than you planned on actually, but it’s the best hour and a half you’ll have in a long time!

Strays, written by Dan Perrault (PlayersAmerican Vandal) and directed by Josh Greenbaum (Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar) is an R-rated nod to kid-friendly animal adventure movies. If Homeward Bound was your thing back in the day, Strays will give you a touch of that nostalgia with a grown up twist. If you’ve ever wondered what Shadow, Chance and Sassy were talking about on their incredible journey, watch Strays.

Reggie (voiced by Will Ferrell), is abandoned by his loser owner, Doug (Will Forte). With the help of a street-smart, dirty talking Boston Terrier named Bug (Jamie Foxx), Reggie realizes that Doug never loved him. Seeking revenge, the strays team up with dog park pals Maggie (Isla Fisher) and Hunter (Randall Park) for an adventure back to Reggie’s home where they plan to take the one thing Doug loves most. I’d hate to give that away here, so you have to check out to movie to see what they do!

These dogs talk about sex, drugs, and drop f bombs more than poop (though there is a lot of poop here too). But, believe it or not, Strays also has a lot of heart. You’ll find yourself in tears and wonder if it’s because of the absolutely insanity and dirty words these dogs throw at one another, or if it’s because deep down it’s just as wholesome as the ’90s animal adventure movies you once loved.
