Wes Anderson’s Latest, Asteroid City, Opens Today

Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City invites us to a desert town in the 1950s with the same name. There’s a teen outer space competition, an asteroid memorial, and of course an alien. The scenery is typical Anderson with bright colors, quirky set pieces (a real estate vending machine) and tiny hotel bungalows that would be perfect for a real-life pop up experience. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to be inside Wes Anderson’s head, his latest release might be the best example.

The story’s plot is all over the place, as we meet the many people who are stuck, literally, in Asteroid City. A recently widowed photographer breaks the news of his wife’s death to his children, an actress is trying to stay out of the spotlight, the hotel manager is trying to keep everyone calm, and the government is trying to cover things up. The b-story line involves the same cast of characters, but this time behind the scenes of a play currently in production. Switching from the black and white city scenes to the vibrant desert town make this film a stand-out among more recent Wes Anderson films.

Asteroid City features a cast of regulars and a few new players too. all-star ensemble cast including.
