A newly created cultural and neighborhood initiative, Germantown Art District (GAD), will be formally announced this Friday at an event in the historic neighborhood. The new initiative plans to highlight and share Germantown’s diverse culture and community with all of Philadelphia. The district has a thriving arts scene with many galleries and cultural associations showcasing local artists and hosting community events. The GAD believes Germantown’s historical, cultural, educational, and community contributions continue to shape and evolve the city of Philadelphia and that is why GAD will be hosting upcoming Fourth Fridays programming and a new festival happening this Fall, the Germantown Arts Festival.
GAD will hold a series of monthly celebrations in the heart of Germantown. On the Fourth Friday of every month, the District will transform the town with vendors, music, and special events hosted by local businesses. There will be activities for all ages and interests that line the corridor.
This Friday, April 28, 2023, is the official Launch Party for Fourth Fridays in Germantown. GAD Founder and Kinesics Dance Dynamics Theatre Owner, Kristen Clark, along with GAD Board Member and Owner of Ubuntu Fine Art Gallery, Steven Taylor, will host the Kick-Off event at their adjoining business. (5423 Germantown Ave / 5427 Germantown Ave) Guests can expect a night full of entertainment from DJ Matigeo (performing in Ubuntu Fine Art) and Black Canvas (performing in Kinesics Dance Dynamics Theatre).
“I created the Germantown Arts District to increase the visibility of Germantown and build on our connection to the larger Philadelphia arts community. Our goal is to inspire young artists to connect and create by providing spaces and opportunities to engage. I want the city to recognize the district’s continued accomplishments in the arts sector,” said GAD Founder Kristen Clark.
Philadelphia natives and friends alike can enjoy the Germantown Arts Festival this Fall. The festival will celebrate artists, thought leaders, and today’s creatives with live performances, exhibitions, entertainment, and non-stop fun. Germantown has always been influential to Philadelphia’s Arts – and that’s because, on the AVE, they don’t just capture the energy of the moment – they are the energy.
