Legendary Philadelphia performers Joilet Harris and Mary Martello have thrilled audiences at Arden Theatre Company for decades, having appeared in dozens of productions on the Arden stage during their legendary careers in the region. Now, the singing actors team up for an original streaming cabaret, featuring songs that span the American songbook and beyond. Part of the Arden Cabaret Series, Harris and Martello present their digital show May 24 through June 6, 2021.
Throughout her 30 year career, Joilet Harris has consistently proved that she is a powerful and dynamic presence on stage as well as on television, with roles on The Wire, Do No Harm, and Law & Order: SVU. Joilet has toured the world as a vocalist, most recently playing Ella Fitzgerald in Ella, The Ella Fitzgerald Story. She has appeared on many Philadelphia stages, including the Walnut Street Theatre, Act 2 Playhouse, People’s Light, and Delaware Theatre Company. She most recently starred as Gloria in the Broadway-bound Because of Winn Dixie, and has also appeared as Motormouth Maybelle in Hairspray, Miss Jones in How to Succeed in Business… and in Ain’t Misbehavin’ and It Ain’t Nothin But the Blues. In addition to her many talents, Harris is a founding and former board member of The Philadelphia Black Theatre Festival, and is an active member of the Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church where she serves as a soloist choir member and assistant choir director.
Mary Martello started performing at seven and has continued through four kids and over fifty years. She trained at BoarsHead Theatre in Michigan, doing everything from Shakespeare and musical comedy to original plays and musicals: in Virginia at Barksdale Dinner Theatre, Theatre IV and Virginia Museum Theatre; in New York at Light Opera of Manhattan, the Public Theatre and a variety of off-off Broadway; in Colorado at the Denver Center Theatre; in New Jersey at Foundation Theatre, Passage Theatre and seven seasons at McCarter Theatre. Now a proud Philadelphian, she has had the privilege of working at the Arden, Azuka, Interact, Lantern, People’s Light, the Prince, the Walnut, the Wilma and 1812 Productions. Mary has received five Barrymore awards; has had the thrill of performing with the Philadelphia Orchestra, received a Lunt/Fontanne Fellowship, and the 2016 Lantern Luminary Award.
Joliet and Mary’s upcoming cabaret will be an evening of show-stopping, memorable tunes that span the American songbook. These award-winning performers will explore some of their favorite songs and memories from their illustrious careers performing in Philadelphia and beyond. Expect to hear songs from their signature Arden appearances in Caroline, or Change (for which Harris won the Barrymore Award for Outstanding Leading Actress in a Musical), Gypsy, and others.
