A Pop-Up Cabaret Bar in South Philly?!

Yes, there is a pop-up bar just off of Passyunk Ave at 1316 S. Percy Street. But it won’t be there for long, so if you want to try something completely different this month, head to Late Night Snacks.

Philadelphia’s cabaret group, The Bearded Ladies, and installation designer Machine Dazzle (read more about Machine Dazzle in RowHome‘s spring 2018 issue here), converted an old auto body shop on Percy Street into a unique speakeasy for the month of September only. Bartenders from Sassafras and The Tin Angel also helped out by crafting some great cocktails like the Fruity Garland (seen below with an Opera Philadelphia Ale “OPA” by Flying Fish).

This pop-up bar coincides with FringeArts’ Fringe Festival (September 5th to 22nd) and Opera Philadelphia’s Festival O19 (September 18th to 29th). During these two festivals, Late Night Snacks will also have late evening performances featuring lots of great artists from nearby and around the world. Drop in after catching a show at either festival or just come by to experience some fantastic cabaret, art installations, and creative drinks.

One of the best things about Late Night Snacks is that everyone can enjoy it, no matter what your budget may be! The Bearded Ladies want to bring this world-class cabaret space to anyone who has an interest in it, so there will be “pay what you can” tickets to all performances of Late Night Snacks. I know this pic is a bit blurry when you get up close, but just look at all the shows packed into the short amount of time Late Night Snacks will be in South Philly! A way better version of everything taking place can be found on the FringeArts website. The link is below so keep reading.

It’s also family friendly…well…sometimes. On Sundays, head over to the pop-up for some early Family Cabarets. I hear there will also be face painting, tattoos, and games! The fun starts at 4:30, show at 5pm. On September 8th: “Neighbors” Drag Story Hour with The Bearded Ladies’ John Jarboe and Cherdonna Shinatra. Sing songs from Mr. Rogers Neighborhood, dance with Cherdonna, and hear stories of friendship. On September 15th: Learn the “Gay B Cs,” with a drag story hour featuring Eric Jaffe and Sapphira Crystal as Patti Labelle. On September 22nd: it’s “Green Eggs and A Graham Cracker,” featuring Martha Graham Cracker! Sounds amazing!

Huge thanks to The Bearded Ladies, FringeArts, Opera Philadelphia, Vox Populi, Hidden City Philadelphia, Passyunk Avenue Revitalization Corporation, and the Mayor’s Office of LGBT Affairs for creating such a fun, welcoming space. Late Night Snacks opened September 7th and will be in existence until September 29th.  Tickets are available on a sliding scale. More info, a full schedule, and tickets for the Late Night Snacks shows and the Family Cabarets can can be found at FringeArts.com
