Are you ready to watch some magic happen? Live and in front of your eyes? The Kimmel Center will welcome the world’s best-selling magic show, THE ILLUSIONISTS – LIVE FROM BROADWAY, for two days only! This magical showcase features some incredibly talented illusionists. Below is our Q&A with Sabine Van Diemen. Sabine, who is from Holland, is considered one of the most talented performers in magic. You can see her next weekend, along with the rest of the cast, as they wow the Philadelphia audience with a one-of-a-kind magic variety show! Come to the Merriam Theater on Friday, May 10 or Saturday, May 11 to have your mind blown.
Q: You work as an illusionist. How did you get into this career? What inspired you to do so?
A: I worked as a dancer in the Holland Show Ballet (I was the youngest ever, I was 18). On the opening night of our new show, the assistant of the magician in the show got badly injured and she couldn’t do it. They looked around the ballet and chose me. The first illusion I did was called FireCage- it’s an empty cage; the magician lights the cage on fire and boom you appear! It was so cool to do. Then, I knew this is what I want!
Q: You career has taken you all over the world- what have been some highlights (places you’ve visited, jobs, accolades, etc.) so far?
A: One of my highlights was definitely being a headliner on the West End in London in 2016. It kicked off my solo career and it was all so exciting and unreal!
Q: You speak multiple languages…which ones?
A: I speak Dutch obviously, English, German, French and I’m doing a Spanish course at the moment for our Mexico shows in June!
Q: Tell me a bit about THE ILLUSIONISTS? What can the Philadelphia audience expect to see?
A: It’s world biggest magic variety show and that is really what it is- all forms of magic like comedy, danger acts, illusions, mentalist…you’re going to get it all!
Q: Your bio lists some of your skills as “escapes, illusions, mind games and bullwhip.” Will we see any of these during the Illusionists show? What is one of your favorite skills to perform for audiences?
A: In this show I focus mainly on the illusions. One of the illusions that I do is an escape illusion and it’s known as the fastest in the Guinness Book of Records!
Q; What do you enjoy doing when you are not on tour?
A: I love Bikram yoga, cooking for friends, long walks with the boyfriend and shopping with my mother!
Q: THE ILLUSIONISTS show could inspire some audience members to pursue a career as an illusionist! What advice would you give them?
A: Do it! If you are inspired and you want to do something new in life (and I’m not just talking about magic), no matter what people tell you- DO IT!
