There’s nothing stopping me from going to NYC on any given day and seeing a Broadway show. Well, except maybe the fact that some of these productions are consistently sold out or resold for way too much money. So, I’m here with some great news! The shows you have been dying to see are coming here to Philadelphia in 2019/2020!

  1. But first, a few facts about this upcoming season:
  2. 14 shows announced.
  3. The shows have a combined 44 Tony Award and 28 Drama Desk Award wins.
  4. Nine of the shows are making their Philadelphia debuts.
  5. Mid-week matinee performances will be new for the 2019-2020 season!

Okay, here we go. The season starts with some returning friends and ends with a drink in your hand…

RENT 20th Anniversary Tour (October 18th to 20th, 2019)
Merriam Theatre
RENT was the highest grossing show ever at the Merriam Theatre and recent performances were SOLD OUT. Grab tickets now for the October return.

Come From Away (October 22nd to November 3rd, 2019)
Academy of Music
A critic favorite about the day after 9/11 in a small Newfoundland town. If you see just one show next season, make it Come From Away.

Mean Girls (November 19th to December 1st, 2019)
Academy of Music
Philly (ish) in the house! Upper Darby’s Tina Fey wrote the book for this show, based on the cult classic movie. Today’s announcement event included a performance by the current Cady Heron on Broadway, Jonalyn Saxer, and a pre-taped intro from Tina Fey (her favorite cheesesteak is from Jim’s, with provolone).

The Spongebob Musical (December 3rd to December 15th, 2019)
The Forrest Theatre
Come see one of the world’s most beloved characters come to life! This is the “feel good” show of the season.

Cirque Dreams: Holidaze (December 26th to December 29th, 2019)
Merriam Theatre
Holidaze celebrates Thanksgiving, Chanukah, Christmas and New Year’s Eve all in one show. With family and friends visiting for the holidays, this is a great show to experience together…and a great gift if you want to start your shopping now!

The Band’s Visit (January 7th to January 19th, 2020)
Academy of Music
TEN! Ten Tony Awards! A town off the beaten path, a group of musicians who are obviously lost, and enchanting music. This show is just pure magic.

Riverdance (January 21st to January 26th, 2020)
Merriam Theatre
Even if you’ve seen Riverdance before, you haven’t seen it like this. The show is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a new experience.

Hello, Dolly (February 18th to March 1st, 2020)
Academy of Music
Well, hello. You know the songs, but have you seen the show? This winner of the Tony of Best Musical Revival wants you in the audience. It will be swell.

Les Miserables (March 17th to March 29th, 2020)
Academy of Music
Les Miserables saw the highest grossing two weeks ever at the Academy of  Music.
A classic. Enough said.

Jesus Christ Superstar (April 7th to April 12th, 2020)
Academy of Music
Jesus Christ Superstar is here celebrating its 50th anniversary.

Dear Evan Hansen (April 7th to May 3rd, 2020)
The Forrest Theatre
Six Tony Awards. And a Grammy. The music and lyrics are by Ardmore native Beni Pasek. You will be found.

Waitress (May 12th to May 17th, 2020)
Merriam Theatre
This is a sweet show- not just because there will be pie in a jar for sale (I hope anyway). But it’s uplifting to the max with a heavy dose of girl power and an all-female creative team.

Summer: The Donna Summer Musical (June 2nd to June 7th, 2020)
Academy of Music
The late, great diva’s story is brought to the stage. Try not to sing along and cause a scene!

Escape to Margaritaville (June 16th to June 28th, 2020)
Academy of Music
The perfect end to a perfect season. Yes, there will be plenty of Jimmy Buffet classics, but there are original songs too! Be sure to have some burgers and margaritas before the show for a full experience.
