Come to the Kimmel Center this week for a Valentine’s Day preview via The Second City- one of the greatest comedy and improv theatres/institutions in existence! The Second City, which opened its doors in 1959, is bringing their touring company to Philadelphia for “It’s Not You, It’s Me”, a show which takes a stab at human relationships through their special blend of comedy.
Second City cast member Jenelle Cheyne talked to me last week while currently on tour with this show. She says “It’s Not You, It’s Me” is perfect for this time of year- post holiday and leading up to Valentine’s Day. The show uses The Second City’s signature improv formats and “archive materials, sketches from the touring company and main stage, that fall under relationships.” Whether it’s a friendship and strictly platonic, romantic, a family relationship, or a missed connection- anything is fair game at this sketch show. Jenelle adds that this is a great show for any group of people- bring your significant other, your friends, some family…with such a wide variety of topics related to relationships, this show caters to anyone.
Jenelle is just one of the talented and funny comedians who will grace the stage for five shows here in Philadelphia between Wednesday, January 30th and Sunday, February 1st. She has been with The Second City since 2016- first working as an understudy or on their cruise ship events, and now with the touring group for the past year. At home in Chicago, she also performs weekly at other renown improv and sketch comedy theatres like Annoyance and iO. She says everyone in the cast of “It’s Not You, It’s Me” performs at various theatres through Chicago, proving that the group of comedians coming to Philly are incredibly experienced and guaranteed to make you laugh.
“We’re only in Philly for five days,” says Jenelle, encouraging everyone to come see the show and escape the real world for a bit. “You can do the other stuff in Philly some other time! It’s snowy, cold, so come inside. The show is fun, heartwarming, thoughtful and ridiculous. We all need a laughter and some relief right now.”
Second City’s theatre is based in Chicago, with other locations in Los Angeles and Toronto. You may not know it, but some of your favorite comedians got their starts at Second City; take a look at the theatre’s history and alumni.
Jenelle’s favorites include Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Keegan-Michael Key, SNL‘s current cast members Aidy Bryan, Chris Redd and Cecily Strong. Of course, she also loves the “classics” like Gilda Radner and Dan Aykroyd. Picking just a few favorites is not an easy task (so I apologize for putting Jenelle on the spot with that question), but I have to agree 100% with her choices. Come out to “It’s Not You, It’s Me” and see some potential next big things in comedy. As a huge improvisational comedy fan, I can tell you how exciting it is to see someone pop up on a television show or see their name in a writing credit and say “wow, I saw them back when…”. Don’t miss your chance to experience some super talented people up close and personal while you can!
