When Sports and Politics Collide: InterAct Theatre Company Presents Moreno

-Brenda Hillegas

Remember 2016? It wasn’t that long ago…and feels like yesterday in a sense because America’s leadership is about to take some very similar turns. But don’t let that keep you away from InterAct Theatre Company’s premiere of Moreno (written by Pravin Wilkins and directed by Seth Rozin & J Paul Nicholas), a fast-paced new play about what happens on and off the football field, and how politics step into the game.

Superstar running back Luis Moreno (Frank Jimenez) joined a new team right at the same time Colin Kaepernick makes his decision to kneel in protest of police brutality. Moreno is looking for a big win and a big paycheck, but heated relationships with his teammates and an incident that shakes up his personal life makes him question what he stands for. Is his career worth more than his own community?

Rounding out the cast are Gabriel Elmore, Abdul Sesay and Charvez Grant. This tight group of performers provide intense dialogue and passionate character portrayals. Moreno is one of the most gripping shows I’ve seen all season and is all too real as we face the upcoming administration.

Come out to The Proscenium Theatre at The Drake and watch the NFL Copperheads in action. You won’t want to miss this one. Moreno runs through November 24th. For tickets and showtimes, visit https://www.interacttheatre.org/moreno
