Philly Film Fest Fast Review: Two Strangers Trying Not To Kill Each Other

The 33rd annual Philadelphia Film Festival runs October 17-27, 2024 and features over 100 films this year. Most films play twice and our own Justin Nordell will be sharing “Philly Film Fest Fast Reviews” to give you a taste of the festival so you can pick and choose which films to make for the second screenings!

Maggie Barrett and Joel Meyerowitz are married artists who are deeply in love. The problem is that, like most marriages, they have their own unique challenges. But unlike most marriages, they’ve agreed to have their marriage conflicts captured on film and documented in Two Strangers Trying Not to Kill Each Other

Joel has had great success as an artist in his career with forty published books to his name, anmounting accolades and fans from all over the world. Maggie’s work is no less important or showcasing of talent than Joel’s but she has achieved far less in her career, and mild resentments have built between them for years. Now 84 and 75 years old respectively, both are at a point in their lives where they are unabashedly who they will always be and the documentary seems to focus not on how these two people fell in love, but how they will stay in love.

With a refreshing honesty and unfettered access to their lives’ most intimate and difficult moments, Two Strangers Trying Not To Kill Each Other steadily morphs from a film about a well off long married couple living out their twilight years to a universal tale of the emotional honesty it takes to make a marriage successful.
