Philly Film Fest Fast Review: Vermiglio

The 33rd annual Philadelphia Film Festival runs October 17-27, 2024 and features over 100 films this year. Most films play twice and our own Justin Nordell will be sharing “Philly Film Fest Fast Reviews” to give you a taste of the festival so you can pick and choose which films to make for the second screenings!

Toward the end of WWII, the titular Italian mountain town of Vermiglio is mostly untouched and unbothered by the Great War, save for a few residents who took up arms and joined the battle. The Delpero family have lived in these mountains for generations and go about their lives they always have. Father Cesare (Tommaso Ragno, With the Grace of a God) is the town schoolmaster while mother Adele (Roberta Rovelli, Netflix’s The Tearsmith) is a homemaker with an army of children to care for, with more on the way.

The film, loosely based on the family history of director Maura Delpero (Maternal), quietly gives most adult and child members of the Delpero clan their own time to shine. While the film is gorgeously lensed, the measured pacing and almost episodic nature of the family stories within make Vermiglio a beautifully rendered but fascinatingly restrained film that felt longer than its two hour runtime.
