Meet Brandon James Butorovich, Dog Man of ‘Dog Man: The Musical’ at Wilma Theater Through October 15th

TheaterWorksUSA’s Dog Man: The Musical is a fun, family-friendly production based on the bestselling series by Dav Pilkey. Brandon James Butorovich, who has portrayed the title character for several years, is excited to bring this hilarious show to Philadelphia at the Wilma Theater. Below, he talks more about Dog Man, the importance of family theater, and his earliest musical memories. Tickets here.

Q: Who is Dog Man? For anyone unfamiliar with the books, can you tell us a bit about this character and what audiences can expect in the show?
Brandon James Butorovich: Dog Man is Part Dog. Part Man. All HERO! Dog Man loves fighting crime and saving the day…when he is not chewing on the furniture! Audiences can expect non-stop fun and laughter. This is great family entertainment. Adults will love it just as much as kids!

Q: Why did you want to be a part of this tour?
BJB:  I wanted to be a part of this show because I truly believe in TheaterworksUSA mission of creating exceptional theatrical experiences for young audiences.  Many times, Dog Man the Musical is the first theatrical show for these kids, and I feel so honored that I get to be one of the actors that introduces them to theater.  Also, I get to bring their hero to life on stage! I think it is pretty cool!

Q: You’ve been playing Dog Man for a couple of years now, what are some key lessons you’ve learned from your character or this story?
BJB:  I have been playing Dog Man for a couple of years, and I continue to learn so much! The biggest lesson I have learned from Dog Man is that even if you mess up or make a mistake, as long as you continue to keep trying and don’t give up, that is all that matters. Dog Man is a dog, there are many times he doesn’t listen well, or gets distracted if a squirrel runs by.  But he never gives up and he continuously tries to be a good boy

Q: Do you have a favorite song or scene from the musical?
BJB:  I think my favorite song is Dog Man is “Go”. It is our biggest production number in the show, between lights, sounds, and special effects. There are a lot of moving parts to it.

Q: How does it feel to travel around the country with TheaterWorksUSA and become Dog Man for so many children?
BJB:  It is so special and I do not take it for granted.  I feel very blessed and I am so thankful to TheaterWorksUSA for trusting me to be the actor to bring Dog Man to life for so many children.

Q: What was your first theatre experience as a child?
BJB:  My first theater experience was seeing Disney’s Beauty and the Beast on Broadway! I was blown away by all the magic, and I instantly knew that this is what I wanted to do.

Q: Why are family-friendly theater productions so important? Why should Philly families come see this show?
BJB:  I think family-friendly theater is important because it is a great way for families to spend time with each other.  One of the greatest things about our production is that it encourages kids to be creative and use their imagination.  A lot of the props we use are made with items any can find in their own homes.  I would love for families to see our show and then be encouraged to create their own shows together at home.

Q: Did you have a favorite book series as a kid?
BJB: Yes! It was Captain Underpants! Dav Pilkey is the best.
