People’s Light concludes its 49th season with the regional premiere of Somewhere Over the Border by Emmy Award-nominated playwright, actor, and composer Brian Quijada. This co-production, presented with Pittsburgh’s City Theatre and Pittsburgh CLO, is a Cumbia hip-hop musical inspired by the true story of Quijada’s mother’s journey from El Salvador to the United States. It’s told in the style of The Wizard of Oz and runs now through August 11th.

Below, Arusi Santi- who plays the Narrator in Somewhere Over the Border– tells us more about the role which guides audiences through the story and why this show is so special.

Q: Tell us a bit about your part in the show. How does the Narrator help move the story along?
Arusi Santi: You can think of the Narrator as your friendly neighborhood guide through this amazing journey. I go in and out of different characters, playing music, singing, rapping, and together we discover the world of this show.

Q: Do you have a favorite song or scene in the story?
AS: My favorite part of the show comes at the very end. It’s somewhat of a surprise though, so I don’t want to give it away. I’ll just say the end of this show is the reason why I’m so passionate about doing live theatre. You’ll just have to come and experience it for yourself!

Q: This is your debut at People’s Light – why did you want to be a part of this show?
AS: I have been a part of this show in previous incarnations, and when I was asked to come back I didn’t even hesitate. Brian Quijada, the author/composer, has created one of the most special shows I have ever been a part of and I’ll always jump at any opportunity to work with him.

Q: What do you love most about your role?
AS: Everything about it! I get to sing, play guitar, laugh, rap, cry, dance, it’s got everything I love to do. The cast has also gotten unbelievably close, so telling this story every night with them is such a gift. I am inspired by them every time.

Q: Why is it important for theatregoers to come to this show?
AS: It’s not often I can say this about a show I’m in, but I can guarantee you will have a good time. You will leave this show feeling happy, hopeful, and wanting to dance your way through this crazy/amazing world we’re living in.
