TILT (formerly known as Philadelphia Photo Arts Center) first launched Philly Photo Day in 2011 and was held every year until 2015. The event was intended as an opportunity for the Institute to engage the Philadelphia community, foster creativity through photography, and highlight the unique sights of the city. Submissions have offered vignettes of everyday life and sights, ranging from moments captured at iconic landmarks like Love Park, to images of kids and pets, to concerts crowds, to creative perspectives of the skyline. The last Philly Photo Day exhibition in 2015 featured 1,412 images captured by participants living in the city as well as surrounding counties, South Jersey, and parts of Delaware.
As the organization celebrates its 15th anniversary, TILT wanted to bring back Philly Photo Day in 2024 to re-engage audiences who are new to the organization and celebrate its community.
“TILT began hosting Philly Photo Day to increase art access through photography for our community,” said Sarah Stolfa, President, CEO, and Artistic Director of TILT. “It doesn’t matter if you’re a professional or have only ever taken photos with a smartphone, everyone is invited to share their vision of life in the city. Philly Photo Day celebrates all our unique creativity, viewpoint and relationship to the medium together.”
The Philly Photo Day exhibition opening reception will be held in conjunction with TILT’s annual celebration and fundraiser InVISION on May 18. Attendees can meet other photography lovers, celebrate community, enjoy entertainment and light refreshments, and support TILT. InVISION is a ticketed event open to the public and focused on celebrating the community of image makers in Philadelphia. All proceeds will go towards TILT’s free youth education outreach programs, discounted classes and workshops, free programming and exhibitions, and artist residencies.
