Philadelphia Singer and Actress Julia Rae Stars in Brand New Movie, “Playing Through,” Local Screening

Julia Rae wears many hats – singer, dancer, writer, cystic fibrosis advocate, former Miss Philadelphia, and now, actor starring in the recently released film, “Playing Through.” Julia also wrote and recorded a song that is featured in the movie, set to be released on February 14, 2024. Julia can’t wait to share “Playing Through” with her Philadelphia community at a local screening on Wednesday, February 28, 2024.

“Playing Through” is a feature-length fictional film honoring the real life sports and civil rights heroine Ann Gregory, the first woman of color to enter a USGA tournament. In the film, Ann Gregory (Andia Winslow) collides in the USGA Women’s Amateur with Babs Whatling (Julia Rae), a privileged white woman from the South. The story centers on the women’s head-to-head competition, with flashbacks that add rich context to the personal struggles that have shaped each of them. For both Ann and Babs, the game is as much about finding inner strength as it is about overcoming obstacles on the course. “Playing Through” is available on Vimeo and will soon be available on Amazon Prime Video.

“Personally, this movie is a lifelong dream come true. A dream I didn’t know I’d be able to chase as a young girl fighting cystic fibrosis at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia,” says Julia Rae, Philadelphia Singer & Actress. “The message of the film is one of grit and determination and if any city exemplifies grit, it’s my hometown of Philadelphia.”

Not only does Julia Rae shine on screen, but she also shines in the studio. Many who know Julia know that she is a talented singer and songwriter, especially after her time on The Bachelor spin-off show, “Listen To Your Heart.” Julia jumped at the opportunity to combine her passion for music with “Playing Through,” so she wrote and recorded “Hedge Your Bets,” a single that is featured in the film. The song will be released on all streaming platforms on Wednesday, February 14, 2024.

“I started writing ‘Hedge Your Bets’ in between takes on set. I was inspired by my character’s resilience and wanted to find a way to translate her fierce spirit into a song,” she says.

Julia Rae is returning home to Philadelphia for a special screening of “Playing Through” at the Cinemark University City Penn 6 theater on Wednesday, February 28, 2024. Accompanied by “Playing Through” writer Curtis Jordan, friends, family, key members of the media, and local residents, Julia is thrilled to be able to share and celebrate the film she’s been working on for over two years.
