The recent Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim’s and George Furth’s Company is now at the Forrest Theatre through December 10th. This five-time 2022 Tony Awards winner (including Best Musical Revival) features Bobbie (Britney Coleman) as a bachelorette in NYC who is about to turn 35. She’s surrounded by all of her friends…her married friends, so, of course they want to know- why isn’t she married? Why can’t she find the right person? Why not settle down?
Company, told in a series of vignettes, highlights the relationships of Bobbie’s friends and what they mean to our main character. The set design (from Tony Award winner Bunny Christie) is one of my favorites in recent Broadway productions and is key to moving along the stories.
Some of Sondheim’s best music is in Company. The iconic “The Ladies Who Lunch”- Judy McLane is stunning as Joanne- and Matt Rodin performing “(Not) Getting Married Today” will be forever stuck in your head. They haven’t left mine since I saw the revival on Broadway two years ago. I thought no one could top Matt Doyle’s Tony-winning performance as Jamie, but Rodin is excellent. The final number in the show, “Being Alive”, shows off just how outstanding Britney Coleman is in this role. It will make you want to rewind and watch the entire performance over again. If you saw her in Beetlejuice on tour last spring, you know just how special she is.
Company highlights the joys and troubles (but, in a good way) of being single, being married, and just…being alive! If you can relate, head over to the Forrest Theatre where the cast of Company will be so glad to see you. Tickets are available online here.
