Philly Film Fest Fast Review: The (Ex)perience of Love

The 32nd annual Philadelphia Film Festival runs October 19-29, 2023 and features over 80 feature films (and numerous shorts!) from over 25 countries. Most films play twice and our own Justin Nordell will be sharing “Philly Film Fest Fast Reviews” to give you a taste of the festival so you can pick and choose which films to make for the second screenings!

Picture it. You and your spouse have been trying to conceive the baby of your dreams to no avail. Nothing has seemed to work. Finally, a doctor comes to you with an answer. You and your partner have been diagnosed by the doctor with “Past Love Syndrome” and the only cure… to sleep with all of your exes again to get the syndrome out of your system.

Come again?

Unequivocally French, The (Ex)perience of Love spends little time on any social or moral quandaries with the premise, before our central couple Rémy (Lazarre Gousseau, Let’s Get Lost) and Sandra (Lucie Debay, Hunted) decide to move forward with the doctor’s orders. Refreshingly, Sandra has a number of past sex partners to contend with and Rémy has… three. Regardless, they begin the awkward journey to reach out to their exes and talk them into one last romp.

Containing some of the most inventive on screen sex scenes I’ve ever seen and a pair of charming leads navigating their loves, losses, and traumas that brought them together at this point in their lives, The (Ex)perience of Love is a laugh out loud funny crowd pleasing rom com that makes the most of its extraordinary premise. In French with English Subtitles

Grade: B+

Catch it at PFF23: Tuesday, October 24th at 8:45pm at the Bourse
