Arden Theatre Company’s 2023-2024 season is off to a great start with the production of ASSASSINS, which has been extended twice since the season announcement earlier this year. The revue-style, original musical, showcases a group of historical figures who attempted (some succeeded) in assassinating Presidents of the United States. Did I mention it’s a Sondheim production too? Because his music and lyrics, combined with this unique concept for a show, should have you running into the theatre!
The cast includes some of Philadelphia’s best performers taking on notable roles: Katherine Fried (Lynnette “Squeaky” Fromme), Scott Greer (Samuel Byck), Darren Michael Hengst (Guisseppe Zangara), Monica Horan (Sara Jane Moore), Christopher Patrick Mullen (Leon Czolgosz), Steve Pacek (Charles Guiteau), Robi Hager (Balladeer/Lee Harvey Oswald), Matteo Scammell (The Proprietor), Miles Jacoby (John Wilkes Booth), and Harrison Smith (John Hinkley). Many of them have been in multiple Arden shows throughout previous seasons.
Assassins is a very funny show, though obviously sad as we watch how certain events in history unfolded and the reasons why. There are a lot of Sondheim productions live on stage right now, with both Sweeney Todd and Merrily We Roll Along on Broadway, Here We Are is off Broadway at the Shed, and soon you’ll able to catch the revival of Company at the Kimmel Cultural Campus. Theatre buffs will likely see them all, or at least be familiar with the story lines, but if you’re looking for a Sondheim classic to jump start your season of music and arts in Philadelphia- Assassins is a must.
