Cirque du Soleil’s breathtaking new production, “Bazzar”, will be making its U.S. debut in the Philadelphia area this month! Beginning September 26th for a one month stay under the Big Top in Oaks, PA, at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center, “Bazzar” will explore new grounds for Cirque audiences while maintaining the high-energy performances of sights and sounds that you would expect to find Cirque du Soleil show.
In “Bazzar”, look for contortion, roller skates, trapeze, aerial rope, hair suspension, fire manipulation, and- for the first time in Cirque du Soleil history- the act of Mallakhamb (a traditional Indian sport). Below, Composer and Musical Director Simon Carpentier talks to us more about the concept of “Bazzar”, the music (inspired by the style you would hear from street buskers), and what makes this show a one-of-a-kind when it comes to the Cirque du Soleil series.
“Bazzar” will run through October 22nd. Tickets are available here.
Q: Can you tell us a bit about your background with Cirque du Soleil and how you became the composer and musical director for the latest show, “Bazzar”?
A: My journey with Cirque du Soleil began in 2003 when I composed the music for “Zumanity” in Las Vegas. Since then, I have had the privilege of collaborating on numerous other Cirque du Soleil productions like “Wintuk” on Broadway, “Reflekt” in Astana, the amazing “Luzia” and other special developments for new shows leading up to “Bazzar.” When the concept of “Bazzar” was introduced, I was captivated by its blend of diverse cultures. What truly resonated with me was its mission to connect with new audiences in places as culturally rich and uncharted as India and other territories previously unexplored by Cirque du Soleil. It is an honor and an exhilarating challenge to extend the legacy and essence of this remarkable company into these uncharted horizons.”
Q: The music for “Bazzar” is inspired by street performers. Why did you feel this style and sound would be a good fit?
A: I sensed that “Bazzar” possessed a crucial rawness, akin to the essence of street performers. As a street performer, your goal is to instantly enthrall and hold your audience’s attention, and the music plays a pivotal role in achieving that. The overall vibe of the show, it’s a bit more intimate chapiteau, and the immediate connection with the audience seemed perfectly aligned with this style of music.
Q: What types of sounds and instruments can the audience expect to hear?
A: Prepare to immerse yourselves in a symphony of exotic guitars and flutes that transport you to distant lands, a pianist’s deft touch that weaves emotions into melodies, and an array of percussion that pulse with the heartbeat of the performance. You’ll be serenaded by captivating vocals that tell stories of far-off places and a saxophone that breathes life into the music’s soul. But that’s not all – our musical journey also delves into the intricate world of sound design, with layers of atmospheric elements in the background, creating a sonic tapestry that envelops the audience. It’s a modern street music vibe that marries tradition with innovation, a vibrant sonic palette that mirrors the diverse cultures and exhilarating energy of “Bazzar.”
Q: “Bazzar” is Cirque du Soleil’s 43rd original production since 1984. How do you think each show stands out after all this time? What makes this one different from the others?
A: The intention with “Bazzar” was to explore new grounds and introduce Cirque du Soleil to audiences who may not have experienced our shows before. It carries a welcoming and inviting vibe, designed to provide a joyful and pleasant experience for all who attend. What truly sets “Bazzar” apart is the sense of intimacy it offers. In this production, you’ll find yourself closer to the performers, creating a personal connection that we cherish. “Bazzar” distinguishes itself through its narrative and compelling characters. It introduces new, never-before-seen acts like mallakhamb that will leave audiences in awe. Additionally, the show features original dance sequences that are fun, setting “Bazzar” apart as a truly unique and exhilarating Cirque du Soleil experience. We think that “Bazzar” not only brings joy to our loyal fans, but also extends a warm welcome to those who may be encountering Cirque du Soleil for the first time. We’re humbled by the opportunity to continue sharing our passion for the arts with audiences around the world.
Q: Do you have a favorite scene or piece of music from the show?
A: Choosing a single favorite scene from the show is challenging because I view the entire production as a cohesive masterpiece. However, there are indeed some musical compositions and scenes that hold a special place in my heart. One of these moments is the opening act. It serves as the overture for the entire show, setting the stage with an explosive burst of energy, vibrant colors, and undeniable excitement. This scene introduces the audience to the world of “Bazzar” and I find its ability to instantly immerse the spectators truly remarkable. Another unforgettable scene is the performance on the corde lisse, accompanied by the song ‘Une Étoile’ which I personally adore. The music in this scene carries a memorable melody, skillfully designed to evoke a profound sense of weightlessness, strength, and beauty. Crafting a sometimes minimalist musical score that aligns with the grace and skill of the performers while maintaining high energy was a delightful challenge, and I take pride in how it turned out. Additionally, the grand finale is a moment of pure celebration and joy. The music for this scene is uplifting and infectious, encouraging the audience to join in the celebration with the performers.
