Applied Mechanics, is back with another one-of-a-kind, totally immersive experience- Other Orbits. Step inside the theatre company’s sci-fi world of mutant species, dance parties, art work, and more surprises at every turn.
Kensington’s Standby Stages sets the scene as you enter the ruins of a failed human colony. The species who live here are trying to maintain a cooperative society and do better than their ancestors. You can move around the two room set during your time here- learn a new dance, listen to the council meeting, relax, participate, play along.
This Other Orbits performance is the final piece of a multi-year project that contained stories in a variety of formats- like a board game, comic book, a kid’s activity pack, an album and more. You can learn more about past episodes here, www.appliedmechanics.us/shows/other-orbits/. The live performance can stand alone and you do not need to study up on previous installments. A glossary on all things PlaNet can be found here if you do want to be in the know., but the characters will introduce themselves and their surroundings at the top of the show.
This is a welcoming space where you are encouraged to be who you are and experience the performance in the way that fits you best. Just observe or fully jump in. Be sure to take a look around though, as the set is filled with lots of upcycled pieces- feel free to get a closer look and feel.
Other Orbits, directed by Rebecca Wright, features Eppchez!, Severin Blake, Rich Bradford, Thomas Choinacky, Jessica Hurley, Justin Jain, Anthony Martinez-Briggs, Brett Ashley Robinson, Izzy Sazak, and MK Tuomanen. Sound design is by Liz Atkinson, costume design is by Nikki Dellhomme, set design by Deb O, and lighting design by Maria Shaplin.
