Northern Liberties Business Improvement District (NLBID) is bringing back Artists at Work, a live art-making event featuring more than a dozen artisans and artists sharing their creative process throughout the neighborhood. Artists at Work will take place Saturday, June 10th from 4:00pm to 6:00pm at fourteen locations, all within close proximity to the brand new Northern Liberties Farmers Market which will run from 10:00am to 2:00pm in the Piazza Courtyard. Spectators are encouraged to enjoy all Northern Liberties has to offer as they navigate this multi-location event, including bars, restaurants, retail shops, and art galleries. This event is made possible with a sponsorship from the Penn Treaty Special Services District.
The Artists at Work series was created in the spring of 2020 to support shuttered businesses and local artists while upholding social distancing protocols. It has since evolved into an energetic collaboration between artists and businesses that brings vibrancy to the Northern Liberties commercial corridors. A custom map will help viewers easily find each location and an event webpage hosts more information about each artist and crafter.
The program is simple: artists will set up outside a business (weather permitting) and create a new work in public view. The public is invited to observe and inquire about the artist’s medium, process, and subject matter. “Northern Liberties has a long history as a place for artisans, crafters, and fine artists,” says NLBID executive director Kristine Kennedy. “We are keeping the spirit alive and offering a platform for local makers to build their audience. There aren’t many events where you get to watch people literally make something and get to ask them about how and why they do it.” Featured artists will include illustrators, painters, upcyclers, potters, weavers, and sculptors.
Hosting businesses include Jerry’s Bar, Penn Herb Co., Trunc, The Random Tea Room, Tuck Barre and Yoga, Ray’s Reusables, Casa Papel, NLArts, 1040 Creative, Just Cravings, Stump. Hudson Table, Once Worn Consignment, and The Fairmount House. Other art galleries in Northern Liberties include Spite Haus and Brotherly Love Gallery, both on the 600 block of N 2nd St., and Pete Checchia Gallery on the 700 block of N 2nd St..
