Chicken and biscuits- when you hear those two delicious words paired together you’re reminding of something satisfying, warm, and comforting. That’s the best way to describe this play by actor, director, writer, composer-lyricist, and playwright Douglas Lyons. Grab your share fast, because Chicken & Biscuits is closing at the Bristol Riverside Theatre on June 4th.

You’re invite to church as the Jenkins family buries their father. Sisters Baneatta Mabry (Miche Braden) and Beverley Jenkins (Gabrielle Lee) bicker as sisters do, in front of the whole family and behind each other’s backs too. But the drama doesn’t stop there. A surprise guest (played by Nellesa Walthour) appears as secrets come to light in this loving comedy about family dynamics. Chicken & Biscuits is filled with laughs, acceptance and forgiveness…and reminds us once again to always make room at the table.

This was one of my most anticipated shows of the season. Chicken & Biscuits was cut short in 2020 at New York’s Queens Theatre due to the pandemic. And I didn’t get a chance to see it when it premiered in 2021 Broadway’s Circle in the Square Theatre. I’ve only seen a handful of performances at Bristol Riverside Theatre, but in my opinion, it’s the next best thing to Broadway. The acting is always top-notch here, as is the set design, and quality of the shows presented.

Chicken & Biscuits has seven more performances. Info and tickets can be found here.
